Canadian Ambassador Alain Hauser visited Šiauliai University
On January 19 Canadian Ambassador for the Baltic States Alain Hauser visited Šiauliai and Šiauliai University.
Canadian Ambassador was introduced with Lithuanian higher education system, Šiauliai University. The Director of Department of International Programmes and Relations R. Karvelienė informed that Šiauliai University pays great attention to international relations and cooperation. She emphasised that Šiauliai University has even 156 cooperation agreements with foreign partners. According to the heads of University, language barrier is the main factor that prevents more intense cooperation between Canada and Lithuania as French is the main language at majority Canadian universities.
The guest visited Canadian classroom at the Faculty of Humanities. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Regina Kvašytė, responsible for the supervision of the classroom, told what has been done since the opening of Canadian classroom in 2001 in order to provide Šiauliai University students and all community with as much information as possible about this country. Students had some optional subjects, several course papers have been prepared. Two lecturers of the Faculty of Humanities had internship in Canada.
Speaking about research activities it is worth mentioning the Forums of Young Canadians as a separate section during the conference Young Researchers Works organised at the Faculty of Humanities in 2003 and 2007. During the conference presentations were made by Lithuanian and Latvian students.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Regina Kvašytė, “Every year we participate in traditional conferences of Canadian studies in Baltic States and from the 2005 we organised the conference in Šiauliai. The articles of Šiauliai University related to Canadian topics lecturers are published in Lithuania and abroad. Various educational activities are implemented at the faculty: exhibitions of Canadian books and photographs, meetings with various famous people – interpreters, writers, ambassadors and Canadian representatives in Lithuania”.
